EPFO – Employees Provident Fund Organization

The full form of EPFO is Employees Provident Fund Organization; EPFO was established by the Government of India in the year 1952 to maintain the Provident fund of the employees working in both public and private sectors. Under the Administrative control of Ministry of Labour and Employment EPFO is operational in providing the Employees Provident Fund scheme, Employees Insurance Scheme, and Employees Pension Scheme for the employees who are working in organized sectors. The Employees Provident Fund scheme was started in the year 1952, the Employees Family Pension Scheme was started in the year 1971 and the insurance scheme was started in the year 1976. Later the family pension scheme was replaced by the Employees Pension Scheme in the year 1995.

EPFO Head Quarters:

The head quarters of the EPF organization is in New Delhi. The head of the organization is Central Provident Commissioner. The current CPFC of EPFO is Shri Sunil Barthwal. Other than the head office there are 21 Zonal Offices, Regional Offices, Divisional Offices and sub divisional offices in each and every State and Union Territory of India.

EPF Online Services:

The Ministry of Labour and Employment launched an official website for EPFO to provide the online services to the employees who are having EPF accounts across the country. From the year 2013 the Ministry of Labour and Employment through EPFO portal enabled the EPF account holders to check the EPF balance online. Other online services which are provided by the EPFO are:

UAN – Universal Account Number:

Earlier the EPF account holders would have different EPF accounts because when the employee changes from one company to another then the employee used to take a new EPF account with the new establishment it was continued till the year 2013. But in the year 2014 the Government of India launched a unique solution for this confusion which is called UAN – Universal Account Number. UAN is issued to an employee by the employer which will be approved by the EPFO.  The Government launched this UAN for both existing EPF account holders and the new ones. Both can apply for the registration of UAN and can activate the UAN. UAN is a unique identity number which is issued to EPF account holder. By using the UAN the employee having different EPF accounts can link all the accounts with one number that is UAN. The Government of India through EPFO via UAN providing number of online services.
