OnePlus Technology Co. Ltd. held a big scale launch event on March 23rd to announce their new line of smartphones for 2021. The brand OnePlus – which is operated under BBK Electronics Corporations – a company which also owns the Oppo and Vivo smartphone brands – announced 3 new devices as part of their 2021 range of smartphones along with the OnePlus Watch which is their first smartwatch. While the OnePlus 9 and OnePlus Pro are the flagships and grabbed all the headlines especially with all the hype that surrounded the event due to their collaboration with Hasselblad, the OnePlus 9R is an India exclusive offering by OnePlus which may have slipped under the radar.
The OnePlus 9R is aimed being an affordable flagship priced in the upper mid-range & entry level flagship range price bracket. The OnePlus 9R will retail for Rs.39, 999 starting from April 14th 2021 on the OnePlus India website. The 9R model from OnePlus is their second most affordable offering in India after the OnePlus Nord 5G.
OnePlus 9 Specifications:
Design: The OnePlus 9R is basically the same as phone as the OnePlus 8T with some minor changes and a lower price tag. The design of the 9R is exactly the same as the 8T except for the camera bump, in the 9R the camera bump has cut-outs for the camera lenses and is covered by a plastic sheet whereas on the OnePlus 8T the camera module on the rear was laid in glass. The dimensions remain the same as the 8T so there is no difference in size or shape of the phone. The OnePlus 9R is constructed using an aluminium frame with Gorilla Glass 5 on the display and Gorilla Glass 5 again on the back of the phone. The phone weighs in at 189g.
Display: The display on the OnePlus 9R is the trusty Fluid AMOLED 6.55 inch display that OnePlus have been using for a while now. The display has a resolution of 1080×2400 pixels. 402 ppi pixel density, 20:9 aspect ratio, always-on feature and supports HDR10+.
Processor: The main computing duties are handled by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 8-core processor and the graphics duties is handled by the Adreno 650 GPU. The Snapdragon 870 is an overclocked version of the Snapdragon 865 and it supports 5G, although OnePlus 9 and 9R do not support all 5G bands in India whereas other devices with the same processors do.
Storage: To support the speeds of the Snapdragon 870 processor, the OnePlus 9R will be paired with UFS 3.1 storage system and offered in 2 options – a 8GB RAM + 128GB storage option and a 12GB RAM + 256GB storage option.
Software: The OnePlus 9R will run on the latest version of Android – Android 11 with OnePlus’ Oxygen OS 11 skin on top. The OxygenOS UI from OnePlus is one of the best custom UIs from a phone manufacturer as it is very similar to stock Android experience with very helpful customization features and other neat options.
Cameras: The rear main camera is a 48MP f/1.7 wide camera with PDAF and Optical Image Stabilization, the secondary camera is a 16MP f/2/2 Ultra-wide camera. There are 2 more rear cameras – a 5MP f/2.4 macro lens and a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensing cameras are also present. The front camera is a 16MP f/2.4 wide angle camera to perform selfie duties. The rear cameras support 4K video capture upto 60fps with auto HDR.
Battery: The OnePlus 9R has a 4500mAh battery with Warp Charge 65 which means the phone supports 65W fast charging out of the box and can be charged from to 0 to 100% in under 40 minutes (as advertised by OnePlus).
Connectivity: The 9R from OnePlus supports 5G, 4G VolTe, WiFi 6 dual band, dual band GPS, Bluetooth 5.1 and NFC. OnePlus has provided stereo speakers but no 3.5mm headphone jack.
The OnePlus 9R will be available in 2 colours – Carbon Black & Lake Blue on the OnePlus India website, major online commercial platforms and their own OnePlus stores in India.
